PERFORMANCE
Cheshire Tennis has a long history of developing and nurturing some of the best junior players in the country. These players have gone on to represent their country and win international and national events across various age groups. The players are supported through monthly and weekly training with the best coaches in the County. The County has been so fortunate with the players always wanting to represent Cheshire, which they have seen as a highlight of their junior careers. The Boys 12U County Cup team went on to win the National Finals in 2023. Many of our junior players have gone to play professionally, attended British and American Universities and transitioned into the men and women’s County Teams.

SELECTION CRITERIA
The County has tried to make the selection policy as transparent as possible for players for the County Training Camps and County Cup teams.

COUNTY PARENT HANDBOOK
Simon Thornewill, Junior Performance Lead, has produced this guide to help parents understand the structure of the county tennis pathway and how players can progress. There is also important information such as competition structure, expectations and selection criteria that you may find useful.

COUNTY OPEN DAYS
We hold two County Open Days a year for 6U – 8U players. This is an important part of Cheshire’s Junior Performance Programme and is part of the selection criteria for being invited to County Training. All club coaches across the county are contacted with the dates and encouraged to speak to the parents of their most promising young players with a view to taking them to one of these special events.
Each day will comprise a series of physical activities and tennis exercises as well as match play. There will be a separate session for the different year groups on the day with each session lasting approximately 1hr 30mins.
What are the Aims of the County Open Day?
-
To allow the County Captains and the County Junior Performance Coordinator to gain a good overview of emerging players at county level including where they train and who coaches them.
-
Provide a fun and enjoyable session for the children.
-
Provide parents with information and advice for players at the early stage of their tennis pathway.
-
Ensure the better players are moving effectively through the pathway in areas of competition, training, and coaching.
-
Select players to attend upcoming County Training camps.
