Cheshire win LTA National Award

Members of the East Cheshire Winter League have been named Competition of the Year at the prestigious 2025 LTA Tennis Awards, presented by Lexus.

Committee members Howell Davies, Tom Brown and Mark Helliar were present to receive the top prize at the awards, which were held at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton, following an impressive year of dedication to the sport.

The league now includes 171 teams, making it the largest adult winter tennis league in Cheshire with over 2,700 players and chairman Davies was thrilled to gain recognition for their work.

Howell Davies (League Chairman) said "At the event, we found out that there are around 10,000 Tennis Competitions each year - so it was pretty good to even make the 5 nominees .. and we were happily surprised to win. Each nominee had 2 or 3 sentences summarising them and our summary highlighted that included that in the 2023-24 season the East Cheshire Winter League had 169 teams made up of 2,560 players. But the key point made was that of the 856 matches scheduled just 9 were not played - and it is pretty obvious that we have to thank the 169 Captains and another 50 or so others at the Clubs who make sure that this number is kept to a minimum".

The East Cheshire Winter League was established 20 years ago and Helliar noted that the competition still intrigues clubs to this day who want to continue their tennis during the colder months.

Congratulations to all.
