Saturday 28th February – 9U Girls Qualifying

The 9U Girls were in action on home soil at David Lloyd Cheadle, led by Lauren Banks and Amanda Twigg. Representing Cheshire were Avaani, Gracie, Lilianna, Sophia, Ella and Olive in a strong team of six. Each match consisted of four singles and two doubles rubbers, with Derbyshire and Cumbria competing for a place at the National Finals in Nottingham.

Cheshire opened their campaign against Derbyshire, who proved to be tough opposition. Derbyshire claimed victories at numbers one and two singles to take an early 2–0 lead. However, Cheshire showed great resilience as our number three and four players fought back to level the tie at 2–2 heading into doubles.

The doubles proved decisive. Cheshire secured the number one doubles, while the number two pairing edged a tense tie-break to seal a 4–2 overall victory in a thrilling contest.

The girls carried that momentum into their second match against Cumbria. In a dominant display, Cheshire won all four singles matches without dropping a game. The doubles followed the same pattern, with two comprehensive wins sealing a 6–0 triumph.

Finishing top of the group, the girls secured their place at the National Finals in Nottingham on 14th March

Sunday 1st March – 9U Boys Qualifying

Sunday saw the boys take centre stage, led by Tony Green and Toby Palin. The team of six, Oliver, Albert, Remi, Jasper, Jack and Stanley, faced strong competition from Cumbria, Derbyshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

The boys quickly found their rhythm in their opening match against Derbyshire, delivering a commanding 6–0 victory while dropping only a handful of games. With five teams in the group and little time to rest, they were soon back on court against North Wales, producing another emphatic 6–0 win.

Next up was Isle of Man. Once again, the boys were superb in singles, winning all four matches convincingly. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, the doubles were not played.

Everything came down to the final match against Cumbria, with qualification for the National Finals on the line. A strong showing in the singles gave Cheshire a 4–0 lead. The doubles pairings of Oliver and Jack at number one, and Albert and Jasper at number two, both secured 4–0 victories to complete another outstanding performance.

With that result, the boys also booked their place at the National Finals in Nottingham on 15th March

A Proud Weekend for Cheshire

9U County Lead Amanda Twigg reflected on a fantastic weekend: “Our Cheshire boys and girls participated in the 9U County Cup events this weekend, bringing all their passion, skills, enjoyment and teamwork. Both teams earned their well-deserved reward of a place in the National Finals. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

A brilliant achievement for both teams and a fantastic weekend for Cheshire tennis.
