Our second Cheshire 7U Challenge Cup event took place at Birchwood Tennis Centre this October. As we hoped, it was an exciting and hard-fought battle. Fourteen club-teams competed against each other in the group stages, hoping to gain a coveted semi-final spot. The standard of our fifty-six young players was brilliant, making any win very hard earned. The future of Cheshire tennis certainly looks bright.

The semis saw Birchwood A beat Poynton 4-2 and Alderley Edge A finish up 3-3 against Widnes A. It was a nervous wait to see who would make the final by claiming the countback victory. With all the results calculated, Alderley Edge A took the win, but both teams should be very proud of themselves. A victory for Widens A over Poynton landed them the consolation of third place.

Onto the final between defending champions, Birchwood A, and the Alderley Edge team. Fingernails were bitten short by this time. Could outdoor club, Alderley Edge, topple the indoor, reigning champions from Birchwood? Six matches later we had our answer. Yes, they could. Alderley Edge took the win 4-2, making them the Cheshire 7U Challenge Cup Champions for 2024.

Congratulations to all the clubs, teams, captains, players, and parents. your participation and efforts made this a special event. But the greatest thanks must go to referee, Mike Atherfold, and to our older Cheshire juniors, who umpired. I am amazed at how they keep track of all those players to make the event run so smoothly. The event would be nothing without you.

Finally, lesson will be learned to make the 2025 event even better, and I am sure the team

captains are already working toward developing their teams for next year.

See you all next October

Amanda and Simon
