Stockton Heath LTC's very own Ian Tennant was a double medal winner at the recent British Transplant Games 2026. Winning the silver medal in tennis and a gold medal in squash is an amazing achievement and we send our congratulations! Read Ian’s remarkable story:-

The 2026 Westfield Health British Transplant Games were held in Sheffield and marked the largest tournament in the 48-year history of the event. The landmark celebration of life and organ donation featured a record 2,857 registered attendees participating across 26 sporting events.

I myself have a hereditary condition called Polycystic Kidney Disease(PKD). I received a life changing kidney, donated by my son, Dan in June 2017. Prior to having a transplant, my kidney function was less than 10% which resulted in very low energy levels - even walking up a flight of stairs would be difficult.

The future without a transplant would have meant dialysis three times a week for 5-6 hours and a significantly reduced quality of life. The British Transplant Games see teams from hospitals across the UK come together to compete. Many athletes also go on to take part at the World Transplant Games.

The Games help demonstrate the benefits of transplantation whilst increasing public awareness of the need for more people to join the NHS Organ Donation Register and discuss their wishes with their families along with bringing together the transplant community to celebrate the gift of life.
